SEPHARDIC HERITAGE IN PORTUGAL
Day1: Évora/Redondo
This morning, your rent a car will be dropped off for you at the
hotel. Depart to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and
the mueum city of PortugaL. Tour the Jewish Quarter, Diana’s
Temple, and the High Studies Institute, where the Inquisition operated.
Overnight in Redondo
Day 2: Redondo/Marvão/ Castelo de Vide
Continue north, through a land of marble and sweet chestnut trees,
griffon vultures and wild boar, to the town of Castelo de Vide.
Visit Marvao, a white-washed village housed in a medieval hamlet
enclosed by 13th century walls. Return to Castelo de Vide for your
overnight.
Day 3: Castelo de Vide/Covilhã/Belmonte/Covilhã
Castelo de Vide’s narrow cobbled streets lead through the
Judería to a tiny synagogue. Jewish presence was very strong
here. Depart to Covilhã, visit the, Woolen Fabric Museum,
a rich part of the region’s history. Continue to Belmonte,
to visit the synagogue, a symbol of the strength and determination
of a race. Also visit the castle. Return to Covilhã to overnight.
Day 4: Covilhã /Guarda/Trancoso/Guarda
Today's route takes you to Guarda, a 12th century town, once home
to a thriving Jewish community, Guarda set the scene for the love
story between a king and a Jewish shoaker’s daughter, whose
descendant would take the throne as João IV. Trancoso too
had a large Jewish population, with curiosities still visible in
the Judaría; here was born the celebrated poet Bandarra,
walk through its medieval streets visiting some of its important
monuments. Return to Guarda.
Day 5: Guarda/Viseu
Viseu is the capital of the Dão Wine Region, a major northern
crossroads since Roman times. The graceful old town blends Romanesque,
Baroque, Italianate façades and Portuguese azulejos, the
wealth from the New World. A prosperous Jewish community lived and
worshipped here. After a visit to the synagogue, continue to the
Grão Vasco Museum, named for the favorite son, Vasco Fernandes,
the Renaissance painter associated with the Viseu School of naturalist
painting. Overnight in.
Day6: Viseu/Tomar
This morning take a last climps at this enchanting city. In the
afternoon, depart south to Tomar. Overnight iAfter a long drive

Day7: Tomar/Obidos/Tomar
Tomar’s 15th century synagogue, housing the Museum Luso-Hebraico,
was ordered to be buit by the famous Henry the Navigator. Explore
this lovely town dominated by the 12th century castle where the
Tplars once ruled. It is a must to visit the extraordinary complex
of the Convento de Cristo, headquarters of the monk/knights from
the 12th century. Then we'll continue to Óbidos, a medieval
white-washed walled town sheltering a synagogue. The main street
is filled with galleries and craft shops offering quality regional
ceramics, linens, and paintings. Return to Tomar.
Day8: Tomar/Lisbon
Drive south to Lisbon, drop off your car. End of tour
